SESSIONS

23a. Frontiers in fluid and melt inclusion research

Co-convenors:
Iain Samson (Dept. of Earth & Environmental Sciences, University of Windsor, Windsor, Ontario, Canada, N9B 3P4) - imsatuwindsor.ca
Robert Bodnar (Dept of Geosciences, Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, VA 24060 USA) - rjbatvt.edu

Fluid and melt inclusions provide the most direct method for determining the temperature, pressure and chemistry of fluids and melts associated with a wide variety of geological processes, including hydrocarbon generation and migration, genesis of magmatic-hydrothermal ore deposits, metamorphism, magma generation and crystallization, subduction zone and mantle processes, diamond formation, and the evolution of extraterrestrial bodies. Contributions are invited that describe recent advances in analytical techniques to study fluid and melt inclusions, as well as novel applications of inclusions to study the evolution of the earth and other bodies in the Solar system.

Keynote speakers:
Alan J. Anderson (St. Francis Xavier University, Canada), aandersoatstfx.ca
Alexander Sobolev (Université J. Fourier-CNRS, France), alexander.sobolevatujf-grenoble.fr
Invited speakers:
Terry A. Plank (Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory), tplankatldeo.columbia.edu
Michael E. Zolensky (NASA Johnson Space Center), michael.e.zolensky1atnasa.gov
Csaba Szabo (Eotvos University, Budapest, Hungary), cszaboatelte.hu
Martin Appold (University of Missouri), appoldmatmissouri.edu
Nobu Shimizu (Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute), nshimizuatwhoi.edu
Robert Burruss (U.S. Geological Survey), burrussatusgs.gov
I-Ming Chou (U.S. Geological Survey), imchouatusgs.gov

23b. Geochronology: the role of fluids

Co-convenors:
Philippe Boulvais (Université de Rennes) - philippe.boulvaisatuniv-rennes1.fr
Marc Poujol (Université de Rennes) - marc.poujolatuniv-rennes1.fr

This session will deal with two complementary important questions: 1) how to date fluid circulations and 2) what is the influence of the fluids themselves on the diverse geochronometers commonly used to date them. These questions can be applied to any level of the continental lithosphere, with direct implications for diagenetic, magmatic, metamorphic and metallogenic studies.

Keynote speakers:
Igor M. Villa (Institut für Geologie, Universität Bern, Switzerland), igoratgeo.unibe.ch
Daniele Cherniak (Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute), cherndatrpi.edu

23c. Nucleation and its effects on geological processes

(co-hosted by Themes 23 and 19)

Co-convenors:
David M. Hirsch (Western Washington University) - David.Hirschatwwu.edu
Stephanie J. Moore (University of Texas at Austin) - sjmooreatutexas.edu

Nucleation is perhaps the most poorly understood part of the mineral crystallization process. The aim of this session is to explore recent advances in unraveling the complexities of the energetics and kinetics of the nucleation process, as well as the geometries and morphologies generated as a result. Contributions are sought from workers who utilize natural samples, laboratory experiments, and theoretical and numerical models. Presentations that explore the implications of recent nucleation findings to deformation, texture, microstructures, geochronology, thermobarometry, attainment of chemical equilibrium, and tectonics are encouraged.

23d. General geochemistry

Co-convenors:
Grant Henderson (University of Toronto) - hendersatgeology.utoronto.ca
Alfonso Mucci (McGill University) - alfonso.mucciatmcgill.ca

This session will regroup topics for which there was no appropriate venue in the list of Themes and Sessions that make up the Goldschmidt 2012 science program. Depending upon the number and subject of the abstracts submitted to this session, the co-convenors may develop topical sessions for the meeting.

Co-hosted sessions:
